15 years ago, at the age of 38, I bought an entry-level DSLR to take pictures for my established real estate business and snap a few pictures of my newborn daughter.

At around the same time, I fell in love with retouching when I stumbled across some “before and after” examples of beauty photography. I was stunned and bewitched by the possibilities of transformation, and creativity. All of a sudden, in my head, photography went from a techy, boring and rather confusing arena to a potential playground of artistry. Except... Photoshop seemed unbelievably complicated. I was so frustrated - as a born creative, it felt like I needed a degree in engineering to figure it all out. I bought every course and attended every workshop I could lay my hands on. I hired a professional retoucher who worked for Vogue shoots to give me 1.2.1 training lasting several months. I hired a lighting professional for personal mentoring. I hired an art nude model to teach me posing. I spent a day with a Lightroom expert who trained me how to edit weddings. I spent every spare penny I had on investing in my photography and retouching education. Practising and learning retouching became my hobby, and somewhat of a refuge.

I quickly put my skills to use and within a year of starting  I was shooting a high-end wedding that was published in a prestigious Italian magazine. By 2013 I was working as a “certified Google business photographer”, cold-calling business prospects and upselling my premium 360 virtual tours, website design and marketing plans. By 2016 I was shooting 35 weddings a year, alone, and doing commercial shoots for Italian businesses (I was also still running my vacation rentals business, managing 25 properties and several hundred bookings a year). Over the years I consumed over 400 books and audiobooks, and spent over 38k dollars in professional training.

In 2017 I entered the world of print competition, and wrote down my 5 year goal: to win a 1st place trophy at international level.

As it turns out, I didn’t need 5 years. 5 weeks later, at WPPI in Las Vegas, I won my first 1st place trophy in the Premiere Category. What actually happened in 5 years was:

• over 30 crystal trophies from prestigious international online and print competitions

• being named Photographer of the Year 6 times in various categories in the UK

• earning Double Master status from the ICON International Awards
